Damian is the typical example of a boy born with a silver spoon in his mouth. His parents were socialites who weren't in love but honestly cared for each other, and were thrown together through social connections. Antonio, his father, was from Venice, Italy, while Samantha, his mother, had lived in New York City all her life. They lived together in a high-class apartment in Manhattan, just around the block from the hospital Damian was born at two years after their marriage.
The two were infatuated with their son, but didn't have any idea how to raise them. To their credit, they honestly loved him, and didn't realize that teaching him that he could have whatever he wanted from whoever it wanted it from whenever he wanted it would be detrimental later in life. They didn't give him much attention, afraid that if they did, they'd do something wrong, and instead provided him with materialistic affection. Desperate for them to notice him and take the time to be with him, Damian began lashing out even from a very young age. He practically had two personalities: the angelic face that he put on when it was needed, and then the tantrum-throwing preschooler that he rapidly turned into. He got into fights with the other kids on a regular basis. His parents horribly misinterpreted his behavior as him being a deprived child. They showered him with more toys, and even less of their time.
When Antonio and Samantha divorced when Damian was eight, it was a shock to everyone involved. They'd grown to be best friends, if not in love. They each had their own affairs, but neither cared, as long as they were both happy. Damian, however, was oblivious to all this. He thought that the reason his parents were always so happy and smiling was because they were in love, even more so than any of his friends' parents (a fact he had bragged about all through his childhood). But Antonio missed Italy and wanted to move back, whereas Samantha thrived on the bustling NYC life. No one had even knows they were separated, but they'd already gotten the custody worked out and everything. School year with Samantha, summers, Thanksgiving break, every other Christmas break, and Easter break with Antonio.
He hated his parents for it at first, grew to resent them with everything he possessed. Damian refused to talk to either of them for nearly a month, even after he was placed in counseling for children of divorces. It was a very long time before he would even look them in the eye again, and he was homeschooled for the rest of that year due to depression once his father departed. Samantha, not knowing what to do, begged Antonio to take Damian a month early, and so the first summer Damian spent in Italy was nearly four months. Fortunately for him, he fell in absolute and complete love with the entire country. When he returned the following September, he was proudly gloating about his Italian name and new home with his father. His general attitude did not improve much, but at least he was happy. While in Italy, he took up sailing, which he became excellent at, and even photography. He had a talent for that as well, and he later made it into a career, initially because it was so easy but eventually because he really grew to love it.
As he entered his teenage years, Damian got progressively more spoiled, but he stopped lashing out at his parents. He loved them both dearly, and by now had forgotten why he'd started in the first place. He turned to drugs and alcohol instead, and though he never succumbed to addiction, they did mark major parts of his life. The women he dated were equally fortunate and unfortunate to be with him. On the one hand, he was actually a very caring guy. He was a perfect gentleman, made sure they were doing things that the women enjoyed. He was thoughtful, intense, and incredibly attractive, all traits that they found completely endearing. However, he still had that dark side. He was rarely actually angry at them when it surfaced, but when something sparked his temper, it turned into an all-out brush fire. They tried and tried to help him with it, and time and time again it only served to get the anger directed at them. Almost all of his relationships ended like that: months and months of bliss, only for him to get furious one night, say a few unforgivable things, and have them walk out on him. They would always return the next day, but he would break up with them anyway, unable to deal with the guilt.
The first and last time he hit a woman was the night of his sophomore year at NYU. He'd been dating her for half a year, and though he'd lashed out once over the phone with her, she did the smart thing and hung up, refusing to answer his calls the rest of the night, so that when she called him back the next morning, there was no guilt for him to worry about. In his mind, she was the perfect girl. So, that last night while the two were drunk out of their minds at a party, everything seemed to be going well - until he got into a fight. It ended quickly, but the anger was still there, and his subconscious was searching for an outlet. Damian found it in the form of his girlfriend talking to another guy, and he immediately accused her of cheating.
It developed into a full-fledged argument until he told her that if she wasn't cheating on him and was as happy with him as she claimed, they should just get married. She said no, the screaming intensified, and when she finally told him flat-out that she didn't want to marry him, he punched her in the mouth before she even had a chance to add the word "yet." He barely believed the hand was his own, and was suddenly rambling out apologies, which she even accepted and forgave him for, telling him they were both drunk, it was both of their faults. Dae wasn't as willing to forgive himself. He walked out, and so yet another relationship came to the same sort of end. He dropped out of college two weeks later and hopped on a plane to Italy, as he did every summer, but this time he never came home.
For a long time, he lived with his father in Venice, but he wasn't freeloading. He made a great career for himself out of photography, and he and his father were relatively content, despite the numerous arguments they had, which was to be expected. He kept in contact with Samantha, who was heartbroken that her only son had moved permanently to another country, but he convinced her to visit with them twice a year, as he refused to set foot in the US again. Antonio and Samantha were still great friends, so it wasn't a problem at all, though Damian still found it inexplicably odd to be in the same house with his divorced parents, both acting so friendly with each other... So friendly that when Damian was twenty-one, Antonio dumped his long-time girlfriend and re-married Samantha, who moved in with them permanently as well. They still weren't in love, a fact that Damian now saw clearly, but she, too, had fallen for the beautiful scenery and clear air, and they saw no reason why they shouldn't.
Two years later, Damian began growing restless. He'd continued to date in Italy and hadn't been able to break his pattern even once, though of course he did nothing to alter his attitude or try to get help for his temper. He always just promised himself he wouldn't do it again. But he wasn't stupid, and seeing that his life was returning to the horrible downward spiral it had been before, he decided he needed to change again. Funded entirely by his parents though he probably would've done well for himself even on his own, he traveled around Europe, searching for a place to settle down, even if only briefly - and chose Clairmont. He's been here for almost eight months now, living in an apartment, and doesn't have any idea when or if he'll ever leave. He works as an art teacher at Clairmont High School, doing Studio Art and Photography.
